Plan your visit Visa applications – general information

The following is general guidance for overseas conference participants based on information from the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Your visa requirements depend on your passport, circumstances and planned activities in Australia.

Australian passport holders do not need a visa to enter Australia. Eligible New Zealand passport holders can generally apply for a Special Category visa on arrival, subject to meeting the requirements. All other passport holders must hold the appropriate valid visa before travelling to Australia. See the official entry requirements.

Use the Department’s visa finder to explore the visa that suits your visit. Depending on eligibility, conference participants may be able to use an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), an eVisitor (subclass 651), or a Visitor visa (subclass 600), Business Visitor stream. Check that your intended activities are permitted. Business visitor activities can include attending a conference, provided the organisers do not pay you to participate. If you will be paid or undertake work, check the appropriate visa requirements with Home Affairs.

ETA applications must be made using the Australian ETA app from outside Australia with an eligible passport. Your ETA is electronically linked to the passport used to apply. Check the official ETA page for the current list of eligible passports and application instructions. If you are ineligible or unable to apply using the app, check other suitable visa options through ImmiAccount; eligible European passport holders may be able to apply for an eVisitor.

Apply well before your intended travel date and allow time for any additional documents, health examinations or biometrics requested. Processing times vary by visa and individual circumstances. Consult the official visa processing times guide; estimates are a guide only and do not guarantee a decision within a particular period. Wait for your visa grant before making travel arrangements.

Conference registration, an invitation letter or assistance from the organisers does not guarantee a visa grant. Applicants must meet all requirements for their visa and comply with its conditions.
